Sponsors needed to place wreaths
Veterans’ graves to be decorated
From staff reports
Wreaths Across America has asked the U.S. Civil Air Patrol to help secure sponsorships for additional holiday wreaths to be placed in 240 veterans’ cemeteries across the country this year.
A portion of each sponsorship will be given back to the USCAP Squadron that solicited the donation. The U.S. Civil Air Patrol will be responsible for placing wreaths on up to 500,000 veterans graves across the country.
Wreaths Across America began in 2006 as an offshoot to the Arlington National Cemetery wreath project, which started in 1992 with the annual placement of 5,000 wreaths donated by the Worcester Wreath Company of Harrington, Maine.
The 2006 ceremonies were conducted largely by U.S. Civil Air Patrol Wings and Squadrons with the help of veterans’ organizations, private citizens, the Maine State Society of Washington, which annually assists with the laying of wreaths at Arlington, and the Patriot Guard Riders.
Donations can be made online (credit/debit cards only) at www.cap.gov/donations.
Wreaths can also be purchased by order form with checks made payable to U.S. Civil Air Patrol. Order forms can be downloaded at www.wreathsacrossamerica.org or through a member of the U.S. Civil Air Patrol (please contact Major L. Michael Wilkinson, Cmdr., Lafayette Composite Squadron, U.S. Civil Air Patrol, at 406-9372 for further information or to request an order form).
The wreath laying ceremonies will commence at noon Dec. 15. The three National Cemeteries in Louisiana are: Baton Rouge National Cemetery, Port Hudson National Cemetery, Zachary, and the Alexandria National Cemetery in Pineville.
