Remembering the past, charting genealogy and preserving history is the mission of the newly-formed West Louisiana Historical and Genealogical Association.

This organization includes Beauregard, Sabine and Vernon Parish areas.

President Dicky Berry explained that there were no such organizations in Beauregard and Sabine parishes and that the three parishes together as well as individually are rich in history and that history needs to be preserved, written down and shared.

The Association will meet monthly on the first Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Vernon Parish Library.

Their first meeting will be held Saturday, Jan. 12, because of the holiday season.

During January’s meeting their guest speaker will be Dr. Lisa Abney, Chairman of the History Department at Northwestern State University.

Abney holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of Houston (1997), an MA in English from Texas A&M University, and a BA in Spanish from Texas A&M University. Abney’s interest in folklore began when she was young, long before she knew that folk life was a discipline – she always found her older relatives’ stories and material culture traditions intriguing. Her formal training in folklore came from her work with Dr. Carl Lindahl at University of Houston.

Abney has served as an advisor to the Local Legacies Program, a celebration of folk life in conjunction with the Library of Congress, American Folklife Center. She has served as a panelist with the Louisiana Division of Arts.

Each meeting the association plans to have a guest speaker.

Officers for the organization have been named and in addition to Berry include, John Crook, First Vice President; Logan Morris, Second Vice President; Secretary, Marcilla J. Cook; Treasurer, Haskel D. Roshong; Director, Gene H. LaCaze and Director, Lynne R. Beard.

Martha Palmer, a Charter Member, will serve as the historian.

Berry is inviting anyone who would like to join to do so. If you join before Jan 1, 2008 you will also be listed as a Charter Member. Annual membership fees are $25.
